Did you know?....

In 1923, Paramahansa Yogananda gave public lectures in New York City at such well-known venues as Town Hall, Carnegie Hall, and even the Hotel Pennsylvania, where many of our annual Center Tours were held.

For many decades, the New York City Center of Self-Realization Fellowship led a nomadic existence, conducting services in various locations  such as the Unitarian Church, The Hotel Wellington, and the Fisk Building. In having to re-pack the altar and SRF materials after each service, members surely gleaned a glimpse of the experience our Guru recounted in his "Autobiography of a Yogi," when his Guru, Sri Yukteswar, presented him with the blissful realization of omnipresence, then handed him a broom immediately afterwards to sweep the floor!

At last, in 1993, one hundred years after the birth of Paramahansa Yogananda, a permanent home for the New York City Center of Self-Realization Fellowship materialized in Manhattan. How fitting that our converted firehouse was built in 1893, the year of our Guru's birth. With a loan from the Mother Center, the firehouse was purchased, renovated, brought up to code and furnished.

We've projected that if we repaid $48,000 per year - $4,000 per month -  we will reach our goal of paying off our loan in a timely manner.  By having 200 people pledge just $20 per month, we can easily reach our goal. Donation pledge cards and mailing envelopes are located in the free literature display in the lower church.

In addition to the generous donations of members and friends,  as a group we've funded the repayment of the loan through regular gift sales, and social activities, such as India Night.

Through your very generous support, we are well on the way to meeting our goal.  In order to keep you updated on our repayment progress, placed in our lobby is a poster which displays how much of our loan is repaid and how well we are doing in meeting our goals for the current year.
